Norway Maple – Acer platanoides
with Connor Gingell (tuba)
When I first observed the Norway Maple trees in Kensington Gardens, they were covered in golden-yellow leaves. Therefore, the piece had to be metallic – I used modified tuba and tubular bells samples. There are three big, solemn Maples on the main pavement, and this also influenced the piece, which is a bit like a slow procession.
Caucasian Elm – Zelkova carpinifolia
with Izabela Stefańska (cello)
The Caucasian Elm is a relict tree originating from mountainous areas of the Middle East. There is only one of its kind in Kensington Gardens and therefore it is special. The piece I wrote for the Caucasian Elm hopefully conveys qualities of sun-dried wood that is moved by a gentle blow of warm wind.
