Eluned Davies

English Oak – Quercus robur

I chose a string quartet to portray the English Oak trees. The timbre of the sound echoed through wood instruments seems to capture something of the essence of the oak tree and its roots. The key is based around the tonic of A minor but the use of interwoven F sharps gives the feel of a Dorian mode which is indicative of traditional English folk music, a fitting context within which to portray the English Oak tree.

Eluned Davies is a composer from the Gower Peninsula in Wales. She is a first-year undergraduate student studying for a BMus (Composition) at the RCM. Singing has always been central to her life and musical development. This can be seen not only in her passion for writing vocal and choral music but also in the lyrical flavour that runs through her instrumental work.
